Carrier Oils Vs. Essential Oils

Posted on July 2, 2013

There are many oils today that are beneficial for our hair. Oils are split up into 2 categories: Carrier Oils and Essential Oils

Carrier Oils:

– derived from vegetables, nuts and seeds

– mainly orderless

– thicker in consistency to essential oils

– can be used for hair and skin

– seals in moisture

Some examples of Carrier Oils are:

Coconut Oil – completely penetrates the hair shaft

Grapeseed Oil – natural heat protectant

Jojoba oil – helps balance oil production in the scalp

Castor Oil – natural hair thickener and promotes hair growth

Sweet Almond Oil – smoothes hair shaft

Olive Oil – prevents hair loss and dry scalp

Essential Oils:

– need to be diluted with a carrier oil

– have a fragrance

– strong in smell

– great at treating scalp conditions

Some examples of Essential Oils are:

Rosemary Oil – promotes hair growth

Peppermint Oil – treats itchy scalp and stimulates hair growth

Lavender Oil – prevents breakage and soothes dandruff

Tea Tree Oil – clears dead skin cells and bacteria

My favorite oils in general are

– coconut oil, castor oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, olive oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, and lemongrass oil
